Embracing Health: Why a Positive Mindset Matters

In a world where it’s easy to laugh off health—“I only floss twice a year…at the dentist!” or “ordering a salad? Are you dieting?”—it can begin to feel like embracing health is a burden, or even a joke. But I’ve learned (the hard way) that health isn’t a joke—it’s the foundation for everything else.

In fact, cultivating a positive mindset around health is not only crucial, but transformative. Let’s explore why.

My Personal Experience: Learning the Hard Way

For years, I thought health meant being skinny. I chased every new trend—low-carb, intermittent fasting, calorie counting, tracking macros. And even when I got down to 105 pounds, I still hated myself. I believed a number on the scale would bring me happiness, but it didn’t.

That’s when I learned the truth: being a certain weight doesn’t equal health or joy. Our mindset is everything.

And science proves it. In one study, participants were given the same milkshake—but one group was told it was a rich, indulgent 620-calorie shake, while the other was told it was a light 140-calorie shake. Even though the drinks were identical, the group who believed they had the indulgent shake showed a greater drop in ghrelin (the hunger hormone)—their bodies literally responded as if they were more satisfied.

Same shake. Different mindset. Different body response.

That moment hit me: our beliefs don’t just sit in our heads—they change how our bodies function. For me, that was the shift. I stopped chasing the scale and started focusing on loving myself while striving to grow stronger, healthier, and more mindful each day.

The Power of Perception

Your mindset shapes your reality. If health feels like restriction or punishment, of course it won’t be appealing. But when you start seeing health as a pathway to confidence, energy, and freedom, everything changes.

It’s no longer about rules—it’s about creating a body and life you actually enjoy living in.

What a Healthy Life Can do For Us

1. Health = Freedom

Imagine waking up energized and confident. Health gives you freedom:

  • Freedom from endless dental and medical bills for preventable issues like cavities, gum disease, diabetes, or heart disease.

  • Freedom from wasting money on treatments instead of investing in experiences with your family.

  • Freedom from the “lose weight” resolution every January.

  • Freedom from feeling self-conscious in your own skin.

Health isn’t about restriction—it’s about freedom to fully live.

2. A Positive Mind–Body Connection

When you care for your body—through nourishing foods, movement, rest, breathing habits, and oral health—you’re not just improving your physical health. You’re shaping your mental health too.

The gut–brain axis shows us that the quality of our nutrition and microbiome directly affects mood and mental well-being. And even something as simple as proper breathing plays a role: mouth breathing dries tissues, disrupts sleep, and adds stress, while nasal breathing restores calm and energy.

Your body and mind are on the same team. When you nurture one, you support the other.

3. Longevity + Quality of Life

Health isn’t about perfection—it’s about investing in your future self. Every small act of care today adds up to more energy, more presence, and more joy in the years ahead.

And it’s not about chasing a destination. It’s about loving who you are now, while becoming who you’re meant to be. The more you choose yourself, the more your kids learn to choose themselves too.

Changing the Narrative

Flossing isn’t punishment—it’s self-care.
Eating vegetables isn’t boring—it’s nourishing.
Ordering a salad isn’t weird—it’s choosing vitality.

When we stop mocking health choices and start celebrating them, we shift from shame to empowerment—and that ripple extends to our families.

Practical Ways to Build a Positive Health Mindset

  • Set Realistic Goals → Small steps create lasting progress.

  • Practice Gratitude → Thank your body for what it can already do.

  • Surround Yourself With Positivity → Stay close to people and spaces that encourage growth.

  • Educate Yourself → Learn how your oral health, gut, breathing, and habits all connect. (My Embrace Your Smile course is a great place to start!)

  • Embrace Your Humanness → You don’t need to be flawless to be worthy. Joy and struggle can coexist.

The Bottom Line

Your weight doesn’t define your worth. Your mindset does. And when you begin to see health as an act of self-love—not punishment—you transform both your body and your life.

So the next time someone jokes about flossing or teases you for ordering a salad, smile. Because you know the truth: every act of self-care is building a stronger, freer, more confident version of you. And that’s the version your kids will remember and model.
