There’s a fine line between being grateful for modern medicine and becoming dependent on it. This is a realization that took me years to fully understand. If you had told me a decade ago that I’d be promoting a holistic approach to health, I probably would have rolled my eyes. I used to think holistic health was “voodoo” or for people who put crystals around their house or relied solely on essential oils. But over time, I realized something important: holistic health is less about what tools you use and more about the mindset you cultivate and the care you give your body every day.

Living holistically doesn’t mean rejecting modern medicine. It means trusting your body’s natural ability to heal and function when supported, while still appreciating medicine for emergencies and when it’s truly needed.

In fact, cultivating a positive mindset around health is not only crucial, but transformative. Let’s explore why.

Oral Health: A Blind Spot in Preventive Care

One area where many of us are overly reliant is the dental office. Did you know the most common chronic disease in children isn’t asthma or allergies—it’s cavities? And yet, we often brush this off as “no big deal.” Cavities are inconvenient, time-consuming, expensive, and unpleasant, but we tend to think of them as an easy fix.

The reality is, cavities are a chronic illness with ripple effects. The bacteria that cause cavities don’t just stay in your mouth. They can enter your bloodstream and contribute to major health issues like heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and even pregnancy complications. Worse, these bacteria can spread to others through shared utensils, kisses, or even sneezes, increasing their risk of disease.

There’s also a mental component to health that can’t be overlooked. Studies show that how we think about our choices impacts our body’s response. The other group felt shame and regret while drinking it. The result? The group with guilt experienced more negative physical effects than the milkshake alone could explain.

This shows how guilt, shame, or fear about our health choices can compound stress in the body, making problems worse. A holistic approach isn’t just about what you do for your body; it’s about how you think and feel about it too.

A Two Way Relationship with your Body

Your body is designed to take care of you—if you take care of it. Think of it as a partnership. When you give your body the tools it needs, it will respond by healing, thriving, and protecting you. That doesn’t mean you’ll never get sick or need intervention. But it does mean you’ll be focusing on what you can control to prevent illness and support long-term health.
